The New Republic Magazine - Gabriele D’Annunzio

Gabriele D’Annunzio
PORTRAIT
I've been ordered by New York magazine The New Republic to draw a portrait of "(The) writer, seducer, aviator, proto-fascist, megalomaniac prince who shaped modern Italy" as Jonathan Galassi, the author of the article, says.
The illustration was featured in the february 17th, 2014 issue.

I tried to show through his face the different emotions he could feel as a poet, a famous writer and in the same time an fascist ideologist. For me they are really strange ways to combine! I also used the axe symbol featured on italian fascist flags for his tie.

A4 drawing done with a black ballpoint pen and pencil on white paper, 2014.
