The Passage of Light

Ongoing project on the transition from 35mm projection systems to digital, from analog film to the digital moving moving image

Cinema is changing; the way it penetrates into our bodies, our eyes and our
ears are changing. Films have started to reveal themselves in tremendously different
shapes and places. The tactile sensation they create in the audience is leaving its place
into a sharp and restless feeling. Film prints in big metal reels have been traveling around
for more than a century. Projectionists splice the reels of film together, they repair the
cracks on the prints and maintain the film’s quality to get exhibited in other theatres, in
myriad of spaces. By 2013, films have started to vanish as film prints and they continue
to exist in hard-drives and are distributed in tangerine cases padded with pink foam. Film
become files.
