The Shanghai Sisters, a group of game-playing girlfriends wanted to organize a unique fundraising event for breast cancer research at Sunnybrook Hospital and Women’s College Health Science Centre. Hoping to raise $10,000 during an afternoon event of Maj Jong, bridge and board games, they needed marketing materials as beautiful as their concept, including advertisements, posters, hold-the-date cards, donor solicitation packages, programs, tickets, stationery and gifts for participants, all designed to stand out in a sea of other worthy causes. The Nyman Ink design team created a logo that tied together all the elements of the event: a breast cancer ribbon made of Maj Jong tiles, outlined in pink. We chose a stunning pink peony (a Chinese symbol of good fortune, love, affection and feminine beauty) as a background for the tiled ribbon and we carried the logo across all of the marketing materials, from the program to a bookmark. The resulting event brought out hundreds of people, raising more than $80,000 for breast cancer care and Nyman Ink won an Apex Award, beating out some 5,000 other design firms from around the world for our efforts. There’s nothing like a project that gives back, in more ways than one.
