The Little Mermaid // Book Cover
Problem // The objective of this project was to create a fairy tale book cover that referenced an original tale.
Solution // After reading up on some classic fairy tales from Hans Christian Andersen and Brothers Grimm, I quickly found the essence of these stories to be much darker than I'd ever considered before (nothing like the Disney versions I'd been familiar with.) The Little Mermaid stood out to me as particularly dark. Keeping in mind that my cover shouldn't necessarily give away this dark ending, I decided to use subtle undertones that show through as texture in my design. *Spoiler alert: In Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, the mermaid's deal with Ursula states that if she can make the prince fall in love with her she can keep her legs and her life. However If the mermaid is unable to make the prince fall in love with her, she will turn into sea foam because it is believed that only humans have souls, and she can only acquire a soul if she is loved by a human. In the end the mermaid does in fact turn into sea foam. The shocking result of sea foam was important to me to include on the cover. I digitally manipulated a photo I took of sea foam on the sea shore. I also wanted to include the mermaid, so I illustrated an image of a mermaid that while beautiful, also includes skeletal shapes as a reference to death. Read Less
