After discovering Sanaz Mazinani's photographic collage, "Blue Angel," at VoltaNY, I was intrigued by the artist's unique style. I delved deeper into her works and methodology, sparking a line of questioning that would eventually guide the creation of the print collection, 'Relative to...'. Mazinani's signature style of creating patterns using digital manipulation techniques - copying, cropping, and mirroring isolated details - closely echoes the approach taken in contemporary fashion textile design. This observation led me to question: What is the defining line between fashion textile patterns and digital art pieces by artists like Mazinani?

Is it 'functionality' that differentiates art from commercial design? Or, could it be possible that a fashion textile pattern, despite its commercial purpose, also deserves to be acknowledged as art if it conveys a profound message, demonstrates masterful craftsmanship, and elicits an emotional response from its audience? Or, has the digital age blurred these lines to such an extent that the distinction hinges purely on presentation, context, timing, and the identity of the creator?
