Inspired by Hokusai's Great Wave, I wanted to appropriate his style for a piece I drew in support of the recovery relief effort towards Japan after it was hit by a tsunami in early 2011. The initial drawing was produced only a week after the crisis, and was to be produced and sold as a t-shirt to raise money for the relief fund. Unfortunately it was never printed, and was only fully completed, digitally, a year later in the Fall of 2012.
The scene depicts the dragon as being an evil being which is causing the flooding, but the samurai warrior, representing all of Japan, rises up and defeats the dragon, in essence, the tsunami. The Japanese characters spell out dedication. The placement of the word dedication is used to describe two things: the dedication of the Japanese people to rebuild after crisis, and the my own dedication towards my art and the completion of this project.
