Floating House - The Geometry of Living

Floating House
4-layer reduction linocut

Floating House is an appropriation project. The impossible form of the building is appropriated from Portal etching by Hungarian printmaker István Orosz, but unlike the original, which is a detailed study of an ancient building, Floating House contemplates the modern architecture of a British housing estate using reduction linocut technique as its medium. Printed on hand-operated Harry F Rochat litho press.

The reduction linocut is a method of block printing in which each consecutive colour layer is printed from the same block. Starting with the lightest colour, more lino is removed from the block for the next layer and each colour is printed on top of the last. The tricky part here is the print registration, as every colour needs to sit perfectly on top of the previous one. The entire edition must be printed in one go, as once the artist have carved into the block for the next layer, he can’t go back to print more. For this reason it is sometimes referred to as "suicide printing".
