The Flying Fortress Project
I always thought this aircraft was impressive. This is not a historical representation, The "Betty Who" never existed, although I did use references based off of a B-17 "F" series. Similar to the famous "Memphis Bell" . I wanted to refine my illustration skills during this project. I used old Betty Page photos and pinup art from that time as reference to get the right look for this finishing touch. I also wanted to refine my abilities in the new Zbrush 4r3.
I began practicing ShadowBox, Dynamesh and a slew of new brushes to help carve out shapes quickly. Having all the references already to go, it was just a matter of blocking out the basic shapes and forms in Dynamesh mode. This new feature is truly remarkable. It opens up even more possibilities compared to modeling in conventional 3D software. I also chose to paint at this step because I was confident I was going to be able to project the polypaint at a later stage.
The bulk of the work was primarily in the Retopology and Unwrapping of the over 20 pieces that make up the aircraft. Once this was done I was able to project the polypaint from the original dynamesh model to the low poly base mesh. Some more tweaking to the Diffuse texture were made. The Specular map and Normal Map were created along with the labels, and when all of the pieces are put together and the textures applied, you get the ``Betty Who``
Hope you enjoy
