  • The Enchanted Rose

  • There are many theatrical productions of Beauty and the Beast- from live adaptations of the popular Disney film, to classical and modern ballets and operas, and traditional British Pantomimes.

I was commissioned by the Theatre Royal Winchester in 2008 to create a number of special effects for their Christmas production. Part of the brief was a real floating rose which would be the powerful visual ingredient in the production that brings-to-life the central magical theme that underpins the story.

I researched extensively and as far as I could discover this had never been attempted before. Most productions rely on projection, and some have a physical rose standing in a vase or bell-jar. None are floating and able to shed petals on cue, or able to be picked up and handled by actors.

Here you will see the final product, of which the whole team and I are very proud.
  • Several additional special effects were commissioned for this production, including the visible transformation of prince to beast and back again, integrated pyrotechnic illusion solutions for the wicked witch, and other little magical touches which helped complete the magical world in which the story takes place.

It was a superb production to be a part of, and I'm delighted with the end result. The Enchanted Rose and several of the magical illusions I designed for this show live on and have appeared in other shows and projects.  Please do not hesitate to contact me for further information.
