The Broadsider (Post Apcalyptic Concept)
- Industrial Design ServedProject Featured On:Industrial Design Served — 5/8/11

The Broadsider began as a side project within the ID group. We explored a lot of post apocalyptic themes focusing on movies, comic books, and video games. The project fell of the map for awhile - the bike design business can get busy! I hopped back on it the following Spring. The vision was to create a story in which the bike was the hero as told by a graphic novel, and the bike itself was the 'realty' that made the graphic novel more plauseable, tangible. The bike was shown at Trek's yearly dealer show - It garnered quite a bit of attention there and around the blogosphere.
The two-page graphic novle that acted as the backdrop for the bike. It tells the story of an oil-less future where downhill bike racing is the king sport, and rider 'Max Malco' (ref Mad Max) is the legendary rider who races his last race on the Broadsider. The race goes awry, a spectator (a young boy) is in danger, Max gives his own life to save him. At the end it is indicated that the boy is now older - telling the story - and still racing the Broadsider.

It had to be branded Trek, but it could not be blatant - I took the Trek 'shield' design and gave it some post-apocalyptic gusto.

Original concept development sketches - summer 2009
An eraly concept using the Trek Session as the platform the prototype bike.

A few development images - this was a labor of love - an extra-curricular project done during weekends and evenings. On the uper right is Jarod Brown- Trek's ace prototype fabricator and all around sexy guy. Jarod did most of the brazing on this frame along with Clint James who formed the tubing. Together these two can pretty much make anything work!
