The Blue Boy is a children's book I made as the final body of work for my study in MA at Arts University Bournemouth. It is a story about a boy who looks and feels different, and his journey where he learns to accept himself as who he is.
The illustrative challenge was to visualise 'difference' and making a positive statement about it. The protagonist was made blue in order to make it impossible to relate the colour to specific race or state of people. A cat and a bird were added to represent those who suffer discrimination around bodies with different sizes.
The Blue Boy was selected as a ‘highly commended’ piece of work by Macmillan Prize in 2013. It was exhibited in the gallery at Foyles, 25-30 May 2013.
