The 19th Amendment

  • This installation commemorates the 75 th anniversary of the 19 th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. The text of the monumental amendment was applied to the floor of the main waiting room in Grand Central Station, in eight-foot letters (9,276 point type). The effect energized the cavernous feeling of the waiting room, encouraging visitors to read part of the constitution, simply because of its scale and context. A 20-foot propaganda tower served as a frame for historical text, images of suffragists, and ephemera. Suffragist rallying songs resonated from the top of the tower.
