- Temporary Art Center Cologne (D)
The colonian hole - a hole of construction, money and politics
The art-city of Cologne had its center at the Haubich Forum before it was forced out of the peoples´ mind on purpose and was released for demoliton. After the rash dismantling of the present there is nothing new in sight!
I understand the hole as a political, cultural and urban chance. As a visible and perceptible `Nichtort´ of the politics the hole becomes a original site of culture and urbanism.
Thought of as a temporary building the project of the temporary art center is supposed to uncover the contraries of municipal decisions as well as to bring up cultural interests.
Where before has gapped a hole there now is a superelevated green which invites to rest. While approaching, the green reveals itself as a metallic fabric beneath which a non expected room can be divined. A lonely ticketmachine, spacious framed by the city-furniture, offers the first hint of an entrance to the art. When entering the square the pedestrian turns into a participant. After getting a ticket, one field of the area opens up and with it the entrance to a unusual place of art. The interplay of the untouched excavation and the technical construct of the beam-grid results in a unmistakably room-experience.
Contemporary artists will discover an exciting field for experiments within the new temporary art center: a totally untreated room, which results from the moving history of the Haubich Forum, offers an exceptional framework for any kind of exhibitons. Complete functions of a museum such as administration, bookshop, restrooms, and café are freemoving, the only fixingpoint represents a constructionsite staircase which allows to enter. Interesting and diverse art-experiences of all styles are expected at this weather-opened exhibitonsarea.
