Here is something new I did for the Southern Poverty Law Centers, Teaching Tolerance Magazine. They have a section in the magazine where teachers write in questions for problems they are having trouble navigating. The question I had to illustrate was from a seasoned African American whom teaches in a southern town. He asked about what he could tell parents who thinks he shouldn’t be teaching about racial inequality during Black History Month. Too me this is a frightening question to ask! As much as I wanted to also allude to the solution (as written about in the response) the art direction was to only show the problem. History is taught so we don’t repeat the same mistakes. Even if our history is messy and uncomfortable, it still needs to be taught. No matter who teaches it, age of the teacher or the color of their skin.
