  • I took a little extra time recently to whip up a new personal piece inspired by one of my childhood obsessions … Nintendo. This is a little out of the norm for me, but seeing as I am a child of the 80′s I think things like Star Wars, Legos, and Nintendo are all hardwired into my DNA so it was really only a matter of time. Super Mario World for the SNES definitely goes down as one of my favorite games I ever played. There was something so incredible about the tightly designed levels and how the world map kept opening up to reveal an ever-expanding buffet of adventures to feast on. And all in glorious 16 bits! I was instantly hooked …
Keeping with the spirit of those memories, I decided to create an image that would feel like a little slice of a vast and sprawling world complete with platforms to scale, coins to collect, and all the flying turtles you can jump on. I also chose to do this one in the “super flat” style that I’ve been playing around with, which seemed to fit nicely with the subject matter. Oh, and yeah, I gave it a little Zen Buddhist spin as well. Enjoy!
