This project was an entry for the
PINarchitecture Design Competition in December, 2013, which placed Top 9 (Editor's Choice). The subject for design was to address the scenario of, "what happens when a window becomes blind?"
"Windows permit light, heat, and, if open, breezes, smells, and sounds, among others. What if the passage of one or more elements were disassociated from the penetration of light? How might an opaque aperture transmit select conditions through a distinct area of wall? What is the value of communicating a non-visual condition from outside to inside, or vice versa?"
Imagining a window without visual qualities, I wondered how a person might interact with surroundings both near and far, animate or inanimate. I questioned how someone could sense the wind blowing through the trees, the birds flying across the sky, or how they could feel the warmth of the sun and the cool of the shade. This lead me to the concept of, "feel the environment telegraph through." While this concept is open to free interpretation, it was important to emphasize the word telegraph. As if holding a live conversation between the indoors and outdoors, I envisioned a responsive window that could communicate the motions, textures, and temperatures of the environment - a system that enables the once visual-only experience through touch.
