Study of the lives of surfers, and their requirements for cheap accommodation in the Venice Beach area.
The idea was to connect surfing with the delicate balance of circumstances between the ocean and sky.
During strong winds, the energy of the waves beneath the Retreat is harvested to direct the wind through specific paths in the building, allowing light to flood the building as the roof structure opens.
The moment of sunset is emphasised via mirroring the reflection in the water surface. With appropriate weather conditions, the building reconfigures itself to blur the boundary between ocean and sky, enhancing the visitors experience of the sunset.
