Magnolia is an unique sunshade with synthetic cane as shadow surface, distinguishing itself from fabric in terms of aesthetics, sustainability and comfort.
"Nowadays, most of the sunshades rely on the use of fabric to provide a shadow surface. However, it is hard to imagine no other materials could be suitable for a shadow surface. The search for substitutes of fabric was assigned by the company Umbrosa NV, a well-known international manufacturer of sunshades.

The final product is called Magnolia [botanic name: black tulip] and consists of eight segments made out of synthetic cane. Instead of actual synthetic cane, polypropylene packaging strips were used to simulate the reed. The segments are lightweight and form an aesthetic shape when closed.

The use of synthetic cane makes this sunshade extremely durable, enabling it to stay outside during a long period of time. By the specific sequence of weaving, each segment is covered with small gaps. This enables wind to pass through the small gaps and creates an extra cooling effect on a hot summer day."
