  • Concept

Having been involved in the making of film and music video projects, I've seen first hand how filmmakers depend on sunlight to work. I saw that a simple, easy to quickly understand interface for finding out the time of sunset / sunrise on a given day would be really useful.

The idea for Sundial is to present an immediatly obvious view of how much sunlight is available today and where the sun is right now in relation to sunrise and sunset. It will ultimately provide a way to intuitively adjust the date and time for the sun calculations.
  • Day view, showing the current sun position relative to sunrise and sunset.
  • Night view, showing the current moon phase.
  • User Stories

Based on my research, I synthesized some user stories to maintain a focus for the further design work.

    Example simplified user stories:

    - As a crew member I want to be able to check the sunset time for today so I can know what time we’ll have to finish filming.
    - As a producer I want to be able to find out the sunrise and sunset times for any time in the future so I can plan a shoot.

  • Development

I used the opportunity to improve my knowledge of JavaScript, and also the use of the KineticJS and MomentJS libraries. The current live version at sundial.duncant.co.uk is still in the early stages and lacks full interactivity, but it does demonstrate that the concept works.

In developing my understanding of interaction design, I believe it is important to also better understand the development process and so the experience of building a prototype in JavaScript has been very useful.
