Communication Design 2nd Year 2013 - Package Design: Project 1: Create a luxury candle
Our first project in Package Design at RMIT University was to design a luxury candle that differentiates from the three competitors Diptyqe, Cire Trudon and Frederic Malle.
The name Stella Borealis is inspired by the Polar star (Stella Polaris) and the Northern lights (Aurora Borealis). Translated from latin, Stella means "star" and Borealis means "north".
The scent of the candle is supposed to capture the Norwegian wild with a mix of grass, wood and various wildflowers. The glass is engraved with the logo and symbol, and the handmade box has a texture on it that reminds of snow. I bought the glass vessel at Country Road in Melbourne and it is filled with bleached beeswax. The candle will burn for up to 100 hours.
For this project I wanted the design to be simplistic and elegant, pure like snow and bright like a star.
