Stabilo LeftRight Pen Research

  • Stabilo LeftRight Pen
Adapting the learning pen for Asian children
  • 2007

The key challenge for this project was to adapt the successful Easy Pen (designed in Europe to encourage proper writing posture) into Asian markets. There were stringent cost reductions: the price points of the European pens were simply prohibitive in the Asian market.

We conducted design research with pre-schoolers (our target market), using a series of prototypes.
  • The most significant insight: Asian writing (often) involves complex scripts or characters (such as those found in Chinese, Korean, Tamil). The European pen had encouraged a leisurely grip position, 30-degree from the table. To enable the precision needed for writing Asian scripts, kids were responding by gripping in a far more vertical position (about 60 degrees).

This insight led to the development of the Asian counterpart: Stabilo LeftRight, a more cost-effective solution featuring an ergonomic triangular profile and finger positions that facilitate & encouraged a more vertical grip.
