Speech Written for Separate Presenter

  • Speech FourWritten By: Heather HainesPresented By: Meagan Campagna             Good evening council members of the Greater City of Sudbury Chamber of Commerce.  My name is Meagan Campagna, and I would like to speak to you today about the new holiday Ontario has instituted, Family Day.  Families are like a house build of cards, you need the right mix of balance to make it all work, and without a solid foundation, the whole thing will crumble.  With this new holiday, intended to bring families together, and give them a day to spend together, I think the City should start a Family Day event that will allow families to be together, doing something together, and having fun.              This event could be in the form of a winter carnival.  Something that could take place in a central location, like Bell Park, and would enable families to get out and enjoy the weather, be active, have fun and most importantly, be together.  It would be something that is fun for all ages.                This Family Day carnival would include skating on Ramsey Lake, tobogganing down the hills in the park, and contests like snowman building.  Shows could be put on in the amphitheatre, and we could have the Wolves come down and meet with fans.  As well skaters from local clubs could put on shows on an area of the lake that is tailored to act as their rink.  Vendors would be set up to sell hotdogs and cotton candy and taffy.  Ice sculptures could be created and showcased along the boardwalk and even have demonstrations of creating ice sculptures.   No matter what the event includes, it’s important that it be something that families could do that is more then going to see a movie or out to dinner.  We want to offer them something that will get them out of the house for the day and have a good time.  Families are an important part of our society, and the City should encourage families to use this new Holiday to be together. This new statutory holiday was created to give families time to be together, and the City of Sudbury should make an annual event to coincide with this holiday to give families a better option in how to spend the day, and maybe even start new traditions.  According to Family Guide " Keeping Youth Mentally Healthy and Drug Free says, “The importance of regular family activities to share ideas and find out “what’s happening” is a great way for a parent to be involved, discuss rules, monitor activities and friends, and be a good role model.” So why don’t we help make this regularity in our community.   Just imagine, a nice winter day. You and your family skating together, laughing together and having a great day. I bet the majority of you who have children, wish you can find time to do these wonderful things with your children. So lets make a difference, together we can build on our community, and make our community one big happy family.  So let’s help make the foundation on that house of cards strong, and make Family Day something that will encourage strong and happy families. With your help and this event, I believe we can take those houses of cards, and turn them into houses of stone.Thank you for your time, and enjoy the dinner and the rest of your evening.
