‘Jews, Christians, and Muslims all profess belief in immortality, but the veneration paid to the first century of life is proof that they truly believe only in those hundred years, for they destine all the rest, throughout eternity, to rewarding or punishing what one did when alive.’

Jorge Louis Borges

Afterlife

There are many different views on what happens to a persons soul after death.
Christian, Muslim and Jewish beliefs are in an afterlife in which on death depending on whether you have lived well and confessed to your sins, you will be reunited with your God in a heavenly place where you will live on forevermore. This is based on a judgement made on your life which will determine whether you will pass through.

Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist beliefs lie in reincarnation in which at death you are judged based on your karma you will either be reborn as a higher being, at the same level, or as a lower level being. The ultimate goal is to achieve a path to Nirvana which is achieved once you have lived well enough throughout all rebirths to gain passage.

This is different for Humanists. They do not believe in an afterlife like other religions. Their idea is that as there is no afterlife you are solely responsible for leading a good life as you see fit. Although there is no belief in an afterlife, they see that the dead will live on through your own memories of them, so although they are gone, they will always be in your mind.

Through this exercise it is clear that even in the emotional stages of dealing with death there is a constant air of doubt based on what judgement will be made on the fate of the deceased after death in religious surroundings. Whereas, in Humanist circumstances due to the lack of belief in an afterlife there is no chance of being distracted by the knowing of judgement.
