Snake Island 'X Marks the Spot' Advertising Campaign

Introduction
Whist studying for my BA Hons in Graphic Design, I have been met with many challenging briefs. This includes a project in which I was tasked with branding and advertising an undesirable destination. I decided to choose a location off the coast of Brazil by the name of 'Ilha De Queimada Grande' or known locally as 'Snake Island.

The Island itself is home to a species of  Viper called the Golden Lancehead that can only be found on this small rock. The reason it is an undesirable destination is due to the immense density of these highly venomous snakes as it is said to have over 5 of them per square metre which makes it an extremely dangerous location.

The requirements of the brief were to create a brand for an undesirable destination and then advertise that brand and encourage people to visit your location. I needed to have a series of deliverables such as Posters, DPS, Application, Billboard, etc.

After I decided to base my project on Snake Island, I immediately went about selecting a reason to head to this location, which I decided would be a survival experience, in which people would pay to head to the island and cross it whist trying to avoid the extremely venomous snakes in the process.

These are my outcomes for the project based on the limited time in which I had to complete the brief which was a short timescale.

'X Marks the Spot' advertising Campaign
The 'X Marks the Spot' advertising campaign was born during a discussion with my tutor, we felt that it could be a good idea to create a teaser campaign for the island rather than showing the location directly. And so it was from then that I created my campaign based on the destination being slowly revealed to the audience.

My poster designs are created with a 3 step reveal in mind, meaning that I would only show the first poster and then over time reveal the next two, which would eventually show the whole destination and allow people to go home and research the location for themselves.

To reinforce my 'X Marks the Spot' Campaign, I decided to create a smaller support campaign for back home. I created this so that people who couldn't afford to get to Snake Island could still do so by completing a challenge. The challenge comes in the form of a nation wide scavanger hunt, in which people must look at a map and head to the locations to win small or big prizes, including tickets to the Island itself.

The map I created is in a similar style to the map of Snake Island. It fits in with the whole campaign and I feel it was a fun way to expand my advertising campaign and broaden its appeal to the audience.
