The first moment I saw Sleigh Bells in concert I knew they were destined to be the next big thing. At SXSW a few years back before the promotion of their debut album Treats had begun, I worked up this proposal for them. Folks love to dance, and even better, they love to dance to Sleigh Bells. It’s the instant bang-your-head-shake-your-hips-hands-in-the-air kind of music your parents hate but teens and young adults love. What better way to celebrate than to show the world? The inspiration came from popular videos circling YouTube Vimeo of folks who work up dance challenges or “dance-a-day” routines. Every track on Treats needed to be celebrated, danced and shown to the world.
Enter the “Make Your Own Treats” contest, and over the course of 10 weeks you have 10 dance challenges and prizes that range from giving away a Canon Rebel XSi to a MacBook Pro. Participants could use their own equipment and upload on their Mac or PC but the best experience came from the proposed iPhone App. The App would allow you to shoot, edit and upload your video to YouTube or Vimeo, view the gallery of videos and vote, and have a personal boombox built-in to blast Sleigh Bells so you could soundtrack your whole day.
