"Shuggie Otis At Jazz Cafe" Gig Poster

Shuggie Otis At Jazz Cafe Gig Poster
Concept, design & illustration
To celebrate famed 70s soul/folk musician Shuggie Otis' triumphant return to the stage at London’s Jazz Cafe, Sony Music/Legacy Recordings commissioned me to create an illustrated gig poster, to be distributed at the venue as a memento for the fans.
As a fan of gig poster art, I wanted to create something that had the feel of the iconic Fillmore posters of the 60s/70s (The Fillmore Auditorium was a legendary music venue in San Francisco). I wanted the typography to feel organic, and had the idea to work it into the shape of Shuggie's hair, based on an old photo supplied by the client. Once I had the basic composition I worked in a rustic, retro colour palette, and by limiting it to 6 colours gave the poster a screen printed feel.

The poster was a digital print on A3 300gsm matte board, distributed at the Jazz Cafe gigs. Digital prints are available to purchase here.
