Pierre Shaeffer was a sound engineer most active in the mid 20th century. Having his beginnings as a technical engineer in the telecommunications industry, Shaeffer collected audio samples of human voices and field recordings which he rendered as free-form musical compositions. His recontextualization of sound established Musique Concrète as a movement, and provided framework for future generations of electroacoustic orchestration.
Pieces in the Shaeffer series combine collage and painting with an emphasis on aesthetic uniformity amongst stand-alone designs. Figures are removed from photos and placed into a blank, dimensionless frame, and begin a new dialogue with the introduction of wet media.
