As a technical engineer in the telecommunications industry, Pierre Schaeffer collected audio samples of human voices and field recordings which he later rendered as free-form musical compositions. His recontextualization of conventional recorded sound established Musique Concrète as a movement, and provided framework for future generations of electroacoustic orchestration.
Pieces in the Schaeffer series combine collage and painting with an emphasis on aesthetic uniformity amongst stand-alone designs. Figures are removed from photos and placed into a blank, dimensionless frame, and begin a new dialogue with the introduction of wet media. These works address the human form in terms of its musicality, without an assigned narrative.
