Sensual Baroque: A Vatican Reading Room in the Context ofGiovanni Lorenzo Bernini
Critic: Greg Lynn // Teaching Assistant: Brennan Buck
This project is a manipulation of the Baroque forms found inBernini's sculptural compositions, replete in the two arms encircling PiazzaSan Pietro and in the baldacchino at the heart of the church. Respecting the principles of plasticity, proportion, and symmetry, the proposed “Third Arm” finds a state of transition betweenthe horizontal continuity of the surrounding colonnades and the relentlessvertical rhythm of the columns themselves. Undulating surfaces culminate in a dome volume, which is suspended by loopingscrolls.
