2009 - Semiotic Familiarity

Semiotic familiarity
Packaging manipulation

I created a print based project that altered consumer experiences. The idea consisted around transforming supermarket products and the curiosity that follows the estranged products that appeared familiar at first glance. I worked autonomously on this project creating replica supermarket items, a re-usable bag and supermarket flyers.

I replicated and manipulated common household items such as marmite, baked beans, toothpaste etc but made alterations using a play on words or subtle changes. When placing my items in an actual supermarket, I observed that people did not notice the estranged products as there semiotic view had already been activated / used.

University Final Major Project // June 2009
This bag concept was a by-product of working on this project. Eco-Bags had just become a new trend in the UK: people wanted to be seen; to be caring for the environment. This bag highlights the hypocrisy & attitudes people flaunt, of those who may not always genuinely care for the environment but are extremely conscious of consumables that are currently on trend.
