The purpose of the self-promotional project is twofold. As the title implies, it serves as a piece for personal promotion as a graphic designer (designed to be sent to potential employers). The less obvious purpose of this piece is to introduce ones self into the graphic design profession. As the final project before graduation, it has been used as an allegory to personal style. Furthermore, it is used as a personal statement regarding the ethical issue facing many designers today: environmental impact.
With such an open-ended problem as “self promotion,” a challenge with infinite solutions, small portions of various types of design were combined resulting in an interactive, reusable package. The package was designed around the light bulb element, as it is such a versatile metaphor. One of the most apparent representation of design is the light bulb, which is immediately associated with ideas, clever thinking and problem solving. The light bulb is also representative of some current environmental issues. Given the amplified voice entrusted to designers, these become issues that they are compelled to have an opinion on.
