Self Projections
A series of self portraits
Self Projections is a series of images where I projected photographs of myself onto various sections of my apartment. Hooked through my personal computer, I projected my portrait onto non-flat surfaces such as corners of a room, a hallway, blinds, a freezer, and a bed. In a time when digital manipulation is now a norm, I wanted to work in a method where my manipulations were all done in camera. Using these alternate surfaces to project on, I was able to bend, disfigure, and chop up my body without the aid of Photoshop. While the images were being displayed, I ran the programs Adium and Growl in the background to push my Facebook chat notifications through. Groupings of people that I am friends with on Facebook became part of the project by connecting to Facebook while I was shooting. Keeping them in the frame left a connection with people whom, minus a few exceptions, I don't keep in contact with at all. This forced a connection between myself and my Facebook friends, regardless of whether or not I still even associate with them. The final images are a step away from the digital side of photography while questioning my own social standards for networking.
