The Self Exposure series is all about the experience of discovering beauty. When I decided to become a figure model I was primarily concerned with earning a paycheck but within a few sessions I discovered a deep well of beauty.
The students drawing me were creating these amazingly beautiful images and I was struck by how similar the vision of these drawings matched up with what it is I am always trying to say with my photography.
I became very aware of a kind of intense cultural irony at work in these drawings. In our culture a woman with my body type is not popularly believed to be physically beautiful and is rarely, if ever, portrayed in that light. However, every single drawing that I have seen come out of a modeling session has sought, and to some degree or another, found beauty in my form.
I started the Self Exposure series with the intension of it being a kind of comment on the disparity between what is believed to be beautiful and what inspires beauty in art.
Traditionally great art has had very little to do with what we believe to be physically beautiful and I had hoped to express just that and I believe that I have. However, along the way I began to look at myself the way that I have sought for so long to look at the world around me and what I found was an intrinsic beauty in myself that I had never seen before.
