Second Screen Concept

In 2010, 180's CEO approached myself and a few others about working on a mobile application designed to compliment the experience of watching sports, or premium quality television.

The basic idea was to aggregate social channels into one conversation, or one place to have conversation so you could feel like you were watching with your friends.

The idea was that for users, the application would always be free, with the development and publishing costs falling on rights holders, and advertisers so that more people could get something out of it.

The entire project was completed in 3 weeks (concept to demo) with myself doing interaction design, and my partner, Matt Steenberg, doing visual and motion design.

My partner and I spent two days detailing the user experience through sketches. We tried to think through how a user would find and select the game they were interested in discussing, and how they'd manage conversations between multiple games/sets of friends. We also investigated ways for users to aggregate their different social networks/chatting mediums together, and how to have a group experience with people from different platforms.

After 2 days, I began wireframing the experience.

Based on our concept discussions, and sketches, I started to detail the experience through wireframes. Because our timeline was short, and we wouldn't be showing every conceivable feature or scenario in our demo, I focused on common situations (Accessing games, switching games, managing news sources, managing social sources, etc.)

Though we were happy with how we were progressing, we felt we were missing the feeling of actually sitting on a sofa with your friends. So we started thinking about a view called "My Mates" that let me take friends, regardless of their source platform, and putting them into the same view. When I say something, they all hear me, and because they're all right infront of me, I see everything they're saying to me.

In just 3 short weeks, Matt and I brainstormed the features of Second Screen, sketched out the experience, documented it in wireframes, applied a visual layer, and produced a product demo that we could take to potential partners. In the weeks that followed, Second Screen was presented to PepsiCo brands, Football clubs, and VC's in Europe who wanted to inveset in it's development.
