The main area of concern I focused this project on was raising an
awareness of the Black Petrel’s decline whist also finding a way of solving the
lack of data collection of seabird captures and deaths. Very little is known of
the numbers and locations of these captures, therefore causing researchers to
estimate. With accurate data, more in-depth and effective analysis can be used in stopping the decline of not only the Black Petrel but also the many other
seabirds in New Zealand waters.
The outputs were a smart phone app that educates as well as lets fishers record captures easily, and also a way of promoting the app, and again educating - through handouts by Ministry of Fisheries Officers at wharfs who check registration, details of boat
and passengers every time someone heads out on a fishing trip.
