Sea Ways is my submission to 'The Art of Superstition', an exhibition I have curated representing the work from 40 members of Illustrators Ireland. The exhibition will open at The Copper House Gallery, Dublin in 2013.
My piece examines maritime superstitions and traditions from Irish and Scottish fishing communities.
Conceptually I developed an old world feel in the artwork, using a controlled palette and utilising ageing textures including hints of linocut and wood block printing. There are several omens presented in the illustration, from seadogs, redheads and clergymen to spilt blood and forbidden words... all of which add some mystery and intrigue to the image.
This illustration has been awarded by the 3x3 Professional Illustration Annual No. 10.
