  • When I began working as an illustrator in the early '90s, (sheesh, this guy is ancient!) highly detailed and realistic scratchboard was one of the styles I chose to work in. I enjoyed the craft, and at the time, I was wired for detail and accuracy. After several years I was ready to transition to simpler and less literal styles rendered with woodcut and digital media. Here are some samples of my earliest work.
  •
This was one of the first scratchboard illustrations I did as a student in 1991.
  •
This series of hot tub accessories was one of my first jobs as a pro. My workspace consisted of a card table lit by a single hanging lightbulb.
  •
This moonlit harvest scene was commissioned for John Nilsen's 1993 album Night Garden.
  •
    Student project

These are Jeld-Wen executives that I scratched out more recently.
