Having already own reptiles and having a new one over the summer I found a distinct lack of good quality and relevant information for the beginner Herpetologist. So I set about looking at a way to present basic information to a new owner and a way to give potential new owners a good basis for the choice of pet. To best achieve this and with the emerging market in tablet computing i decided an App was the best format for this project.
To begin, the Brand was a vitally important part of this project as it would set the tone and be seen through out the app. I wanted to create something simple but that hinted at both reptiles and the name scales, which in its self has two meanings; one of the scales that all reptiles have and the other of the decision making and weighing up of choices before you buy a pet. I chose the S from arial bold and manipulated it to look like a coiling snake. this was then given some minor effects to lift it from the backgrounds and give it more emphasis.
The App itself consisted of two main parts. the first was a reptile information section that covered basic information for the top 5 Reptiles. it included such information as lighting temperature and food. the way i designed the interface was so you could always switch between the sections without having to backtrack through endless sub menus to get to another section. The second section is a simple quiz to allow the user to answer questions relating to their lifestyle in order to attain which of the top 5 reptile pets is best suited for them, this then links to the first section that I have talked about. Their is a smaller section that contains useful and helpful links for the user. Each section has the same theme but a different, yet vibrant colour. Green, orange and teal were the colours i chose and for the whole i think that they work well.
All in all i am really happy with the outcome and please with what i have achieved and the fact that with some minor tweaking I believe it could be pushed and developed to a working model.
