The person I've been working around is the inspiring artist, Saul Williams a.k.a. Niggy Tardust. I've illustrated/sketched him because his work is mind blowing, dark and sometimes strange. For the portraits I've made,I have watched his performances, read his poems and listened to his songs. For the two portraits I made I chose the Song "Tao of now" Children of the night and "Skin of a drum" to base my drawings. To start this project, I quote, unquote him;
"And I can’t become my father when it’s all been said and done. His completions won’t complete me. I’ve divided me by one. I’m the answer to his riddle. I’m the caution of his wind. I’m the spoon wedged between tongue and teeth beneath his trembling grin. And I dare add my revision for I dare not suffer twice. And I dare not reinvent the past. And I dare not be the Christ. And I welcome every sufferer. And I welcome every Saul." Saul Williams - Skin of a drum
I think the mood is set, let's continue with the project. The first portrait I made was based on "Tao of now" His strong facial expression, the eyes and the beard were the perfect 'objects' to play with and experiment.
For the second portrait I went for hot colors and cleaner drawings to work with to match the look and give it a more energetic feeling Based on "Skin of a drum". You can see the results below.
