The purpose of this project is to elaborate a photographic essay that conveys a universal portrait of a suburban middle class, based on the experience of having once lived in the suburbs located north of Mexico City, in an area locally known as “Satélite” (satellite). The goal is showing the peculiarities of this regional environment, while striving to reflect the suburbanites of the World.
Sateluco is a popular and pejorative term used by the people of Mexico City, in reference to the inhabitants of “Satélite” and surrounding neighborhoods. The focus of Sateluco -the photographic project- is based on some of my family’s anecdotes from the Nineteen Seventies and Eighties (accounts which helped shape my formative years), as well as on the keen observation and analysis of a region once dubbed by its chief planner, architect and urban planner Mario Pani, as the "ideal suburb" of Mexico City.
