Studio Under Manufacture

For the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery’s annual benefit and auction, bay area designer Jordan Geiger of Ga-Ga contacted SUM to help produce a temporary event space that would create various types of zones in the gallery and the atrium spaces of San Francisco’s neoclassical War Veterans Memorial building. Defined only by illumination and lightweight materials, these zones were modulated by thin, digitally milled plywood sheets, which in turn filtered projected light around the event for the bar, auctioneer, DJ, and other functions. The entire installation needed to be installed in two hours and taken down in one hour, so an inventive system of simple zip ties was created to connect the panel system together.  After the event, the ties could quickly be snipped and the panels can easily be flat packed and stored for future events.

My responsibilities included project design, fabrication, and installation.
