About Safari 7

The 7 Line is a physical, urban transect through New YorkCity’s most diverse range of ecosystems. Affectionately called theInternational Express, the 7 line runs from Manhattan’s dense core,under the East River, and through a dispersed mixture of residences andparklands, terminating in downtown Flushing, Queens, the nation’s mostethnically diverse county.

Safari 7 circulates an ongoing series of podcasts andmaps that explore the complexity, biodiversity, conflicts, andpotentials of New York's ecosystems. Materials are available online orsoon, via cellphone, and can be experienced independently or in toursor workshops organized by Safari 7 team members. Safari 7 imaginestrain cars as eco-urban classrooms, and invites travelers to act aspark rangers in their city. Safari 7 plans to engage the broadest rangeof New Yorkers, from commuters and school children to urban explorersand designers, in active research and exploration of their ownenvironment.

The Safari 7 team is a collaboration among architects, designers, educators, and students.  The Urban Landscape Labis an interdisciplinary applied research group at Columbia University’sGraduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation focused onthe analysis and transformation of ecological processes and urbansystems. Results

First Safari 7 exhibition took place successfully in Fall 2009 at Columbia University's Studio X Materials from this first Safari 7 Reading Room have been repurposed for exhibits for Queens school children. Exhibit may also travel to Beijing for Summer 2010. The goal is to set up workshops with Safari 7 team members andlocal architects, planners, landscape architects, ecologists to makepodcasts, and maps of Beijing. Partners may develop a parallel project around Beijing's 13 line.
NYC Metro Transit Authority partnered with Safari 7 for Earth Day 2010 events in Grand Central Terminal and elsewhere. Safari 7 logo and advertisement appeared in 7-Line subway cars, on posters throughout the subway system, and was printed on one million MetroCards.
The revised Safari 7 website attracted increased traffic and podcast downloads, facilitating growth of the project as a whole.
