Sabon - Anatomy and type illustration

The project was based on the study of the anatomy, characteristics and usage of the typeface 'Sabon'. Sabon is an old style serif typeface designed by typographer and designer, Jan Tschichold. The typeface is a modernized version of the classics that still hones each letter's fine details, and the evenness of the serifs. I came up with a type anatomy poster and a set of illustrations composed entirely out of letters, glyphs and other characters from the typeface.

The graphics are aimed at displaying the characteristics of the typeface and its usage.

The first graphic is a type illustration based on the iconic photograph of Audrey Hepburn who appeared on the cover and headlines of Vogue time and again. Magazines like Vogue and Esquire use a slightly modified version of the typeface for headlines. The artwork is therefore inspired by the magazine’s, one of the most iconic figure, Audrey Hepburn.

This graphic displays the origination of the typeface. Sabon was developed for a group of German printers, out of the need for a uniform font that would look the same whether set by hand or Monotype or Linotype machine. They wanted the typeface to be modeled on Garamond and Granjon, and to be five per cent narrower than their existing Monotype Garamond, to save space and money. Hence was born Sabon. The artwork thus shows how the typeface 'Sabon' was modeled out of 'Garamond'.
