The main aim of this project was to design and produce packaging for a demo CD by the band SWIMS. As well as that I would design and produce some other promotional material such as gig posters and flyers and a website.
This project involved creating a visual identity for the band swims, this was the first step and the probably the most important part. The project title I chose is carrying on from the subject of my dissertation. Which asks the question how can the design for music (graphic design) relate to the music itself. After asking this question I really wanted to design something with this in mind.
The SWIMS identity is inspired by the music, the lyrics, the band members and their interests. I am close friends with them so this really help me to know more about what they liked. A lot of influence is drawn from nature and times spent out in the english country side, exploring in the day, or making fires at night. This is also what influences the band as they write songs. On top of this image of nature I wanted something that would relate to the modern, alternative, math rock sound of the music. My idea was to manipulate the nature images, to see nature in a fresh different way. I chopped the images up into triangles to represent the choppy stop start sound of SWIMS. I wanted the imagery to be something new that might not have been seen before in the same way the music is something you may not have heard before. I think there isn't always a definite right or wrong with something like this, as people will interpret music and images differently and have different opinions whether a sound relates to an image on not. But I am pleased with what came up with and I hope people will understand my thought process.
The kaleidoscope idea sparked from this idea of the triangles and taking something natural and manipulating it. I worked out that i could include a flat kaleidoscope to be made up with the demo package. This would allow someone to manipulate nature for themselves and take the SWIMS experience further.
There is a reason the CD is the first thing you get out. The idea is you take that out first and put it on, and while the SWIMS plays you explore the rest of the visual side of the experience at the same time.
