Renga is a genre of Japanese collaborative poetry originating in thethirteenth century, with three to four poets generally being consideredthe minimum needed to be able to write new verse. The shelter designedprovides enough room for a dozen or more poets to meet in the imaginarylandscape. Pursuing a volcanic rock expanse for the design’s location,I hoped to develop something expressive and otherworldy to hopefullyprovide inspiration for its inhabitants. The structure consists ofplywood and lightweight translucent plastic forms that could easily becarried to remote sites and simply be bolted together, and secured tothe landscape with pressure joints.
