  • NYC Aids Memorial Park Competition
    Client: FLEX Architecture
  • This competition involved the design of a pocket park and integrated memorial and interpretive centre, in the region directly adjacent to the hospital most associated with treatment in the early days of the AIDS epidemic.

The concept that Bill Reid from FLEX architecture used as an underpinning for the parti was of a red AIDS ribbon, formed both of the path / paving system and with integrated red uplights set into that paving system.

The sub-grade pathway is surrounded by interpretive centre and offices, with open glazed walls facing into the space, all wrapped around a central feature space. Around the rim of this recessed area is a walk, at grade level, through the park setting with trees, benches and seawalls, all both overlooking the central carved volume and reinforcing it formally.
