Louise Brooks (1906 - 1985)

A colorful character of the American Old West, Calamity Jane was a frontier scout, friend of Wild Bill Hickok, an uncouth, illiterate alcoholic, occasional prostitute and highly regarded for her generosity and kindness. Her wildly exaggerated frontier exploits were recorded in, "The Life and Adventures of Calamity Jane by Herself" among other works of Western fiction of the time. Princess Angeline (1820 - 1896)

Princess Angeline, also known, in the Lushootseed language, as Kikisoblu, Kick-is-om-lo, or Wewick, was the eldest daughter of Chief Seattle. The 1855 Treaty of Point Elliot required her tribe to leave their lands in the Seattle area for a reservation but she remained, in a waterfront cabin near what is now Pike Place Market, until her death in 1896. I can’t help wondering how she must have felt as the sole member of her tribe in a wild, frontier city, with her own people far away in exile.

Zitkala-Sa (1876 - 1938) 

Zitkala-Sa was a Sioux writer, musician, and political activist. She wrote the first Native American opera (The Sun Dance) as well as numerous books recalling traditional Native American stories as well as chronicles of her upbringing in which she was pulled back and forth between a dominant American culture that wanted her to assimilate and the one she was born into. She also founded, in 1926, the National Council of American Indians, an organization which lobbies on behalf of Native American rights.

Austrian actress who starred in 31 films, was married 6 times, had 3 children (1 adopted) and helped pave the way for today’s wireless communication technology with her co-invention, alongside George Antheil, of spread spectrum communications and frequency hopping. Pretty awesome life.

Lucretia Coffin Mott, who once said, “Any great change must expect opposition because it shakes the very foundation of privilege,”  was a lifelong abolitionist, women’s right’s activist and social reformer. By the time of her death she was considered the greatest American woman of the 19th century.

A prostitute and outlaw of the Old West, she was the only known woman to have robbed a stagecoach, a crime she was then sent to the all male Yuma Territorial Prison for. After serving 2 of her 5 year sentence, she was pardoned, according to legend, after claiming to be pregnant.
