- These photos were taken from the red zone in Christchurch.
At 12:51 pm on Tuesday, 22 February 2011 Christchurch was struck by a 6.3 on the Richter scale earthquake, killing 185 people and destroying a large portion of the city. The city center is completely closed off and guarded by the military. Only construction workers have access to it.
Through the fences these photos were taken and I must admit that seeing a city center like this, was like walking near a big post-apocalyptic movie set. Tall buildings were taken down and when I was observing closely I could see that some of the buildings were completely slantwise, like the tower of Pisa. It was a surreal sight, knowing that it was very real and that so many people died.
On the other hand I experienced a great deal perseverance from the people of Christchurch, the will to rebuild and the will to recover from this disaster.
