Recognition: Remapping Insurance

Design a means of making car insurance
more affordable for young people,
namely students, by encouraging safer
driving behaviour.
Solution: The driving of young people is monitored and controlled through performance remapping.
This enables young drivers to get lower insurance premiums. Remapping is the term used for adjusting the ECU (engine’s computer) settings in cars. Air/fuel ratio, shift settings, and rev limiters can be changed to enhance performance. Fully legal services are widely available. The solution is simply to reverse the technology of remapping, reducing the vehicle’s performance. Each young driver will have the opportunity to opt-in to a lower premium by having a remap uploaded to their vehicle. This will limit their performance and speed. They will be able to opt-in through a website service called Recognition where they can select a 10%, 20% or 30% performance limitation. The insurance company will pay for the remap to be uploaded to the vehicle by a specialised garage or mobile service and will monitor how it is driven through existing telematic (Black box) technology. Drivers will be able to choose what limitations they would like to be applied to the car. The more they add, the less their premium.
