RG03a is a wooden cube designed to conceal a precious object. “As a practising architect, these objects represent functional small-scale pieces of architecture” the designer explains. Each piece is unique being laser engraved with design authorship, production and an individual edition number.
Rui Grazina has drawn inspiration from traditional Japanese secret boxes to launch RG03, a new product collection from the architect and designer for SPSS, Portuguese fabricators of furniture and joinery for architects including Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto Moura. The original piece, RG03a, is a wooden box (76x 76x 76mm) of wenge comprising four elements, one of them being at the heart of the block holding the precious object which is formed from satinwood.
Future pieces within the range will evolve from the same cube size and with forms taking more structural or organic design approaches, “I believe the practice of architecture is related to the design of furniture pieces; working on small and large scales at the same time is very important, in the sense that these represent complementary sides of the design process” the architect explains.
