Qompendium Print Volume & Lee, "Sea of Tranquility"

  • Qompendium & Lee Jeans "Sea of Tranquility"
... a tribute to the Apollo 11 landing on the moon 1969

  • The "Sea of Tranquility project was initiated and directed by Kimberly Lloyd at Qompendium in collaboration with iconic Jeans brand Lee for the Qompendium Print Publication Volume 1.. Kimberly really challanged me with her vision of this project and there was a flurry of emails going back and forth leading up to the start of this project. I had been totally blown away by the beauty of Michael Hansmeyer's 3D work and early on in this project I knew I had to get "outside help with this project and I was thrilled when he accepted. Michael was kind enough to teach me the very basics of the 3-D lighting & rendering engine Maxwell which I applied to some models that Michael created exclusivly for this project.
The mix of the sinister, viral-looking, organic-ness of his 3D models and the technological aspect of the rendering process was very appealing to me and I spent countless hours marveling over this to me completely new 3-D world. Early on in the rendering process I was struck by the calmness and feeling of tranquility in this for me absolute new way of making images, this rendering...
I now realize how completely ignorant I was accepting this assignment, but maybe ignorance is bliss...

The absolute purity of the finished structures, gently floating over the cluods in some sort of primordal pre-historic world,  guided us into a smooth look for the fashion shooting, and I became very thrilled about the opportunity to try something "commercial looking"
Because of logistics and workflow issues we had to shoot the fashion after rendering the 3-D models.
That meant the lighting in the fashion images had to follow the lighting from the rendering in Maxwell.
Knowing that, we carefully orchestrated the shoot, letting the 4 different lighting situations determine the order of the shooting.

    Dawn, sunrise, morning and noon...
